SunPower is seeking a Performance Analysis Engineer for the Module R&D department. The role is on the Performance Engineering team.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Analyze data from a variety of sources (solar PV systems, laboratory and field tests, manufacturing data) to characterize PV module and system performance and provide valuable insights to R&D and management teams
  • Build models and run simulations to predict PV module and system performance in various environmental conditions. These models may include electrical, thermal, optical, and materials components.  
  • Work with a cross-functional team of PV module engineers, cell scientists, and product managers to drive the next generation of solar energy products
  • Drive projects from ideation to completion, then write reports or give presentations to summarize results and learning
  • Occasional collaboration with external industry partners



  • BSc or M.S. with 2+ years work experience, or Ph.D., either in a relevant engineering/physics field (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials, physics, or equivalent) or data science or equivalent
  • Coursework or work experience in physical modeling, data analysis, statistics, programming, and some experience with physical technology such as electrical/mechanical/chemical/materials engineering, physics, optics, etc.
  • This role emphasizes physical modeling and data analysis. However, the role also requires at least a basic understanding of engineering and physical technology
  • Some experience with programming and software tools for modeling and computational problem solving
  • Demonstrate strong technical knowledge and the ability to work on cross-disciplinary problems
  • Good working attitude, able to multi-task a variety of projects
  • Quick learner, independent, able to work and deliver results with minimum supervision



  • BSc with 5+ years work experience, M.S. with 3+ years work experience, or Ph.D., either in a relevant engineering/physics field (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials, physics, or equivalent) or data science or equivalent
  • Experience with solar PV technology and performance modeling
  • Experience with laboratory or field testing of physical technology or products
  • Experience with programming in python, and statistical analysis using JMP or similar software tools
  • Expertise in physical modeling, data analysis, and energy technology
  • Ability to suggest and pursue alternative solutions to complex problems
  • Self-starter and comfortable with owning projects
  • Ability to combine technical and business considerations (e.g. cost, financial value to customers)
