SunPower is seeking a Material Engineering Intern for our Material Development Group within R&D Department.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):


  • Innovate and develop the material for the non-conventional solar module design
  • Conduct hands-on experiments to characterize the material properties and their degradation rates
  • Establish the mathametical model to predict the material lifetime in various environmental conditions in the field
  • Write reports or give presentations to summarize the results and learning




Minimum requirements - The least amount of skills and training candidates must have to do a specific job.  Candidates not meeting these requirements will not be hired for this position.


  • Minimum 3 years towards B.S. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or equivalent. Graduate students are encouraged to apply.
  • Able to design and execute experiments, collect and analyze data and report experimental results
  • Demonstrates strong technical knowledge and the ability to solve cross-disciplinary problems
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint) required

Good working attitude, able to multi-task a variety of projects

  • Quick learner, independent, able to work and deliver results with minimum supervision


Preferred requirements


  • Graduates in 2020 summer who are able to extend their internship beyond summer are encouraged to apply
  • Coursework in engineering polymer science, material characterization, fabrication processing, advanced optics, and physical modeling
  • Research experience in material development and characterization
  • Hands-on experience on mechanical testing of materials such as tensile test, DMA, etc
  • Hands-on experience on material characterization techniques such as FTIR, DSC, Rheology, UV-vis, Leakage test, etc
  • Knowledge of highly accelerated life tests such as damp heat, thermal cycling, UV exposure, and lifetime modeling
  • Knowledge of JMP or equivalent data analysis tool 
  • Self-starter and comfortable with owning projects



Summer Intern Program Overview
•    10-12 week summer program
•    Interns will individually work under the direction of their managers and will participate in a series of preplanned events throughout the summer, including executive presentations, a team-building day, and an end-of-program intern presentation to his/her manager and eStaff member about the project they delivered during their internship.
•    All interns will complete the program by the last day of August 2020.  At the completion of the program, the intern will be evaluated and considered for possible future full-time employment upon graduation.
•    Hourly-based, paid internship, approximately 40 hours per week.
•    Intern responsible for acquiring housing accommodations if they are not local to the office
