Summary of Role:

We are seeking a hands-on technical leader to lead our Applications Engineering team. The applications engineering team is the “voice of the customer” and is the bridge between product engineering and the field. The AE team ensures a successful rollout of new products and uses a closed-loop learning process to influence the roadmap of new product development and sustaining product improvements. The AE team members are product subject matter experts (SMEs) and direct or provide top-level escalation support. The AE team determines the root cause of field and product issues and solves them or engages development to implement solutions. The AE team works with many functional groups including product development, field applications engineers, sales, customers, manufacturing, operations, and technical support.

 

A strong preference is for candidates with previous solar or energy monitoring experience. Candidates with a proven track record of applications engineering excellence in other industries will be considered.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage an in-house multi-disciplinary team of 4-8 highly skilled applications engineers and provide mentorship
  • Be the voice of the customer in the product development process
  • Participate in cross-discipline engineering design reviews
  • Participate in industry-wide standardization efforts and represent SunPower
  • Support the transition of the product from prototypes to production release
  • Document system product acceptance criteria
  • Develop technical documents including user manuals, datasheets, and technotes
  • Work with training, channel and NPI groups to ensure the successful launch of new products
  • Provide top-level product subject matter expertise and the highest level of technical support to field and other customer-facing resources
  • Own field closed-loop learnings process including Beta and Limited Launch programs to improve products

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering and 10+ years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 8+ years
  • Strong leadership ability and an ability to lead a multi-disciplinary technical staff
  • Must be an excellent team player with strong time-management and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a deadline-oriented, and fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven experience working with customers and field personnel
  • Proven experience working directly with customers
  • Proven experience in providing management with field issues and prioritization
  • Ability to think creatively, learn quickly, and develop innovative solutions
  • Proven field experience and/or electrical characterization, troubleshooting, and analytical skills
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work both independently and with multiple teams
  • Ability to manage both individual and collaborative team projects
  • Strong project management skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
  • Leadership and management of both direct and matrixed reports
  • Internet networking and other data experience
  • Hands-on programming experience in C/C++, Python or other scripting languages

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Individuals in this position may be required to obtain additional training and certifications to comply with SunPower policies such (but not limited to) as NFPA70E or First Aid/CPR.

Travel throughout the US may be required. Up to 25% travel with occasional overnight stays.

When in the field individuals will be expected to be capable of performing tasks similar to those of an electrician or field technician.

This is a Richmond, CA-based position, and candidates are expected to lead a team from that location. Some home-office time will be expected until facilities are fully opened. This includes frequent online meetings, on-camera presentations, and phone calls.
