SUMMARY OF ROLE

SunPower is seeking a senior mechanical design engineer with expertise in developing highly reliable products capable of withstanding long-term outdoor exposure in a variety of environments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, ABILITIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES include (other duties may be assigned):

  • Conceptualizing, developing and characterizing current and future solar products that optimally proliferate SunPower’s highest performing solar cells.
  • Using CAD (SolidWorks Preferred), prototyping (3D printing, prototype molding/extrusion, machine shops, and production vendors), reliability testing and CAE simulation (Abaqus/SW Simulation experience preferred) to rapidly construct and validate testable product.
  • Bringing mass manufactured products to market, working effectively with contract manufacturers (CMs) and SunPower’s manufacturing teams to enable production.
  • Developing and maintaining product (2D and 3D engineering drawings using GD&T, PDM, material specifications, etc.) and reliability (test procedures (DOEs) that fulfill quality and reliability test plans (QRTP), Design and Process FMEA, etc.) documentation. 
  • Collaborating closely with SunPower’s cell development team to assess and refine current and future cell topologies enhancing their reliability.      
  • Verifying products are able to pass relevant domestic and international certification protocols (UL / IEC etc.) and overseeing their testing protocols.
  • Clearly articulating design tradeoffs, experimental procedures, reliability risk and product capabilities to a diverse audience of management, product engineers, NPI engineers, manufacturing, quality and reliability teams and R&D peers.  Holding technical reviews, writing reports and giving presentations that summarize experimental & modeled results.   
  • Efficiently finding, assessing and solving problems related to performance, manufacturing, and product deployment related to mechanical, thermal and electrical aspects of the product. 
  • Conducting hands on work, being able to comfortably lift 50lb, climb ladders and use lab equipment while holding safety as paramount.    
  • Directing and encouraging junior level engineers engaged in similar endeavors.  
  • Traveling domestically and internationally up to 20% to work sites, manufacturing locations and vendors.

 

RELATED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirements - The least amount of skills and training candidates must have to do a specific job.  Candidates not meeting these requirements will not be hired for this position.

  • A BS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics with a focus on engineering mechanics and simulation with >5 years of engineering experience.  A higher degree is preferable.  Equivalent work experience can suffice.       
  • Strong knowledge of CAD software (SolidWorks preferred), ability to create engineering drawings for molded, extruded and fabricated assemblies with a thorough understanding of GD&T, PDM and database software to organize and revision control BOM components and their related documentation.   
  • Experience in designing high volume manufactured goods including use of metal/polymer extrusion, molding/casting, sheet metal punching/forming, etc.
  • Familiarity with working within a R&D environment, ability to learn rapidly, and a willingness to dive deeply into literature related to unfamiliar areas of mechanics that are necessary to characterize solar panel behavior on a macro (panel in an outdoor environment through its lifetime) and micro (sub-component simulation, optimization and testing to diagnose and predict failure modes that impact the performance of the larger system) levels. 
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical testing, component construction (mill, lathe, CNC) and skill in data acquisition, analysis and presentation.   
  • Basic electrical competency, training to work around high voltage safely.  
  • Understanding of materials science, being able to narrow down and evaluate appropriate materials for use in an outdoor product with an expected lifetime of >25 years.   
  • A demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize and drive multiple projects in an organized manner while adhering to tight development timelines and cost constraints a strong working attitude, able to work collaboratively through cross-disciplinary endeavors with a variety of cross-functional teams.

Preferred requirements

  • Expertise in the development of solar panels or systems and the relevant protocols.
  • Proven ability to design solar panel components (machined/injection molded/extruded) and concepts from scratch
  • A deep understanding of materials suitable for use in an outdoor environment along with their relevant manufacturing processes.  Knowledge of each’s development timelines, limitations and relative cost. 
  • Experience in conducting material testing (mechanical, thermal, corrosion, HALT  etc.) and test and tool development
  • Experience in product packaging and transportation
  • Familiarity with and use of rapid prototyping to assess designs prior to ordering production components.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment developing, automating and optimizing processes.
