We are seeking a hands-on technical leader to lead our Residential Solar, Storage, and IoT Applications team. The residential applications engineering team is the “voice of the customer” and is the bridge between engineering and the field. The AE team ensures a successful rollout of new products and uses a closed-loop learning process to influence the roadmap of new product development and sustaining product improvements. The AE team are top-level product subject matter experts (SMEs) and provide top-level escalation support. The AE team determines the root cause of field and product issues and solves them or engages development to implement solutions. The AE team works with many functional groups including engineering development, sales, customers, manufacturing, operations, and technical support.

A strong preference is for candidates with previous solar or Energy monitoring experience but candidates with a proven track record of applications engineering excellence in other industries will be considered.


  • Manage an in-house multi-disciplinary team of 4-8 highly skilled and provide mentorship.
  • Be the voice of the customer in the product development process.
  • Participate in cross-discipline engineering design reviews. 
  • Participate in industry-wide standardization efforts and represent SunPower.
  • Support the transition of the product from prototypes to mass manufacturing
  • Qualify third party products to meet the SunPower system and quality requirements
  • Write system product acceptance criteria.
  • Develop technical documents like user’s manual, datasheet, tech notes, etc
  • Work with training, channel and NPI groups to ensure the successful launch of new products.
  • Provide top-level product subject matter expertise and the highest level of technical support to field and other customer-facing resources
  • Own field closed-loop learnings process including Alpha/ Beta programs to improve products
  • Monitor Large fleet of the systems to identify issues to develop solutions and feed learnings into the new product development process





Minimum requirements

  • B.S. degree in Engineering and 12+ years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 10+ years
  • Strong leadership ability and an ability to lead a multi-disciplinary technical staff
  • Must be an excellent team-player with strong time-management and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a deadline-oriented, and fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Proven experience working with customers and field personal.
  • Proven experience working directly with customers.
  • Proven experience of providing management with field issues and prioritization.
  • Ability to think creatively, learn quickly, and develop innovative solutions.
  • Proven field experience and/or electrical characterization, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work both independently and with multiple teams.
  • Ability to manage both individual and collaborative team projects.
  • Strong project management skills.


Preferred skills/experience

  • Top tier of university education. Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
  • Leadership and management of both direct and dotted line reports.
  • Internet networking and other data experience.
  • Hands-on programming experience in C/C++, Python or other scripting languages
