Summary of the Role:


This role is in the Module R&D Group. The Performance Engineering Intern’s primary focus is to support outdoor testing of PV module products at SunPower’s R&D Ranch in Davis, CA. The position involves work within a dynamic, cross-departmental team of engineers, technicians, analysts, and internal customers to identify research needs, develop and execute analysis and test plans, and communicate research results to assist in the development of new products and services. This is a very hands-on role, including indoor and outdoor fieldwork at our test facility. 


Intern Program Overview:

•    Immediate need for candidates starting in the next 2-4 weeks, will transition into 10-12 week intern summer program
•    All interns will complete the program by the last day of August 2020.  At the completion of the program, the intern will be evaluated and considered for possible future full-time employment upon graduation.
•    Hourly-based, paid internship

  •  During the academic year: part-time, approximately 10-15 hours/week
  • Summer program: approximately 40 hours per week

•    Intern responsible for acquiring housing accommodations if they are not local to the office 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assist with outdoor PV test installation, maintenance, and execution  
  • Operate indoor and outdoor PV test equipment
  • Perform data quality control
  • Assist with test facility operation & maintenance
  • Support R&D Engineers with performance analysis and report generation
  • Work closely with other engineers, and work on cross-functional teams with a strong drive for results
  • Innovate, and solve challenging technical problems with a positive, solution-oriented approach
  • Fieldwork requires the ability to perform light construction, including handling PV modules up to ~50 lbs



Education, Experience, and Qualifications


  • Upper-division student in Engineering or related field
  • Energy industry experience, particularly solar industry, preferred but not required
  • Programming experience a plus, especially Python; experience with GitHub a plus
  • Creative, self-motivated and self-directed
  • Should be comfortable with hands-on technical or experimental work (mechanical and electrical)
