Director, Development East

SUMMARY OF ROLE

 

This position is part of the SunPower Development team whose accountability is to bring projects through the development phase and enable the sale of the projects, while preserving project margins and schedule.

The Director of Development, East will be responsible for managing all development activities for the portfolio in the East Region, including leading projects through permitting, interconnection, real estate, etc. and delivering project economics (“project P&L”) at the point of sale to investor(s).  . This person will lead a critical team of developers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and manage a portfolio of projects in the development phase, with a substantial impact on the Direct Commercial P&L.  

The Development Director will partner with the Senior Director of East and National Account to build a strong portfolio of projects for SunPower to deploy its energy solutions and serve its customers.  This person will work closely with the Origination leadership of the East to plan resource allocation, make strategic decisions on interconnection & permitting, legal approaches, financing approaches, schedule and other risk mitigations that impact project success in terms of P&L and execution. Specifically, this person and the development team will support the origination team in the negotiation of contracts with customers to ensure transparency of project related opportunities and risks.  In the development phase, the Director of Development (and development team) will lead and manage all aspects of the project, including leading the project team (legal, finance, origination, etc.), to successfully sale the project to investor(s). The person will advise and present recommendations to executive senior management about critical items for the P&L, issues and opportunities related to potential commercial transactions, long-term and short-term planning issues and/or real-time operational issues. The Development Director will report directly to the Sr. Director of Transaction & Development.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Key leader working closely with Senior Director of East and National Account origination team to help win new business and drive to contract execution.  This will also include identifying project opportunities and risks to drive stakeholder discussions and negotiations (i.e. customers, partners, financiers, etc.)
  • Responsible for the hiring, training, development of a high quality team of qualified “utility” players that can both be experts in various required fields and perform with excellence at the complex role of deal Ownership from contract execution to NTP.  Team collaboration, Accountability, Communicating, negotiation and proactive planning with legal, finance and strategy skill sets the team should be driven towards.
  • Leadership for the activities that will supporting and provide expert input for due-diligence evaluations and review efforts related to potential commercial transactions.
  • Actively involved with the Executive and Finance Teams identifying alternative financing partners
  • Working cross-functionally with other departments involved in the overall advancement and evolution (inc. change order management) of projects including Origination, Engineering, Construction, Legal, Accounting and Finance teams, incorporating the input of subject matter experts, with the objective to enhance project margins and planning
  • Jointly responsible for managing the P&L of all projects within the region generally from contract execution to Financial Close / Notice to Proceed, and in some cases beyond
  • Directing the interconnection, real estate and discretionary permitting aspects of commercial projects
  • Managing with close alignment with Project Finance, the financing of transactions as we achieve Financial Close / NTP including all elements required to achieve FC / NTP: PPA, title, valuation, production forecast, legal documentation, …
  • Identifying and managing relationships with consultants and external legal counsel
  • Structuring progressively a multidisplinary team of up to 5 direct reports supporting the Region portfolio covering developer, technical support, interconnection, analyst and incentives  
  • Establishing a regional project development strategy in collaboration with counterparts from the Origination and Market, Policy, Strategy departments that best positions the company for near-, medium- and long-term success.
  • Representing SunPower with external project stakeholders including landowners, permitting agencies, transmission providers, and at public hearings and government and community events
  • Establish strong working relationships with utilities, ISOs and industry representatives
  • Build coalitions among industry associations and experts to support SunPower Interests

Minimum Education & Experience

  • 8+ years’ experience (or equivalent) in:
    • the renewable energy electric industry
    • renewable energy project development, including permitting, real estate, and interconnection,
  • Experience developing renewable energy projects through project financing and closing of transactions
  • Network of consultants and other professional relationships to support SunPower in-house development efforts
  • Experience working with project stakeholders and in public environments
  • Experience presenting project development proposals and activities to senior management
  • Fluency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Demonstrated ability to develop new business relationships quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
