Location Information: Role will be heavily involved in Illinois, New England, and the Tri-State Area.  SunPower is looking for candidates who live in any of these general vicinities.


SunPower is seeking a Commercial Commissioning Technician to safely support system startup activities on commercial solar projects. Field work includes travel to each site, system monitoring setup, testing and inspection of new systems as well as troubleshooting communication and performance issues. Office work includes deliverable, work order and documentation management in addition to pipeline tracking, coordination and scheduling.  The Commissioning Tech is also responsible for directing subcontractors to perform similar work as needed and ensuring the safety and quality of all site commissioning activities in the direct commercial channel.


Continuous process improvement will be integrated with daily work as we sharpen our Jedi powers.  This role will work with Project and Construction Managers, Engineers, Designers, Contractors, and others and will use multiple data management systems to perform and track the work.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Ensure all commercial site commissioning is conducted in a safe manner with accurate JHAs in use and appropriately trained personnel on site using proper PPE per task
  • Setup monitoring and communications configuration on site utilizing various computer interface programs including tracker commissioning where required
  • Travel to and inspect commercial solar installations for mechanical quality, electrical soundness and reliability for 20+ years of operation
  • Troubleshoot and drive corrective actions during performance validation for each site including component replacement and shade analysis using a SunEye
  • Troubleshoot and repair DC and AC electrical systems including testing for:
    • Open circuit voltage
    • Operating string current
    • IV curves
    • Insulation and resistance
    • Thermal imaging
  • Troubleshoot and repair string inverters, power meters, meteorological stations and data acquisition systems 
  • Track, communicate and report all field work in timely manner
  • Coordinate with Commissioning Management to help plan portfolio commissioning activities including MV testing where required
  • Coordinate with the Project Team on items requiring escalation from construction or commissioning deliverables
  • Read drawing set and project test results to prepare for system inspection
  • Review Construction Quality Report and follow up on items requiring escalation
  • Coordinate pre-commissioning activities and deliverables
  • Ensure Non-Conformance Reports are entered in appropriate system for component failure
  • Actively participate in reoccurring staff and stakeholder meetings and trainings


Minimum requirements -  

  • Demonstrated safety, quality and customer first focus
  • Troubleshooting expertise with ability to systematically approach issues, diagnose and correct
  • Familiarity configuring communications and troubleshooting Ethernet, Modbus and other computer networking connections
  • Practical experience with electrical wiring and basic construction practices
  • Proficiency with AC/DC multimeter and amp clamp, megger operation and electrical systems diagnostics
  • Successful experience working self-sufficiently with minimal or no supervision
  • Ability to manage time well, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Skills in use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other common office software
  • Process oriented and strong organizational skills with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the organization, as well as outside customers and vendors.
  • Associates degree and three years related work experience or equivalent
  • Valid Driver’s license and ability to regularly travel to other states and regions for a few days or occasionally a few weeks at a time


Preferred requirements

  • Commercial journeyman electrician
  • Inverter training
  • Experience with IV Curve tracer, IR camera, SunEye or equivalent shade analyzer
  • Experience with Box or similar document management software
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to see the big picture, anticipate problems and how they will affect the project team, and proactively address these issues
  • Experience in the solar PV industry or other power generation sectors
  • OSHA 30 Certified
  • Current Part 107 FAA drone license
