Summary of Role:

SunPower is seeking a Commercial Solar and Storage Engineer (Operations & Maintenance)  to safely direct operational activities and provide technical expertise across commercial solar and storage projects. This position is responsible for delivering SunPower’s ongoing service and performance obligations for PV and energy storage systems deployed by its Commercial & Industrial (C&I) business segment. This individual will be responsible for working closely with SunPower’s commercial customers, O&M subcontractors, vendors, investors and various project stakeholders to deliver superior service and ensure its deployed systems perform at or above expectations. 


Specific responsibilities will include:


  • Ensuring all on site-related engineering activities are performed in a safe manner consistent with policies and procedures established for SunPower and our customers
  • Providing technical guidance on operational and commercial issues while advancing best practices across the Commercial Business
  • Recommending and implementing monitoring and SCADA solutions to solve complex communication issues
  • Leading technical initiatives and major maintenance projects to achieve targeted solar & storage availability and performance
  • Troubleshooting performance issues and driving corrective actions to resolution
  • Developing corrective and preventative maintenance quality programs to drive a proactive approach to all O&M activities for assigned sites
  • Reading contracts to understand applicable requirements
  • Controlling project and portfolio P&L including Performance and Energy Savings Guarantees
  • Engaging with stakeholders to optimize business processes including managing availability guarantees, exclusions, response times and warranty claims
  • Building operational customer relationship by actively onboarding and managing expectations, delivering to contractual responsibilities and improving ongoing reporting and escalations
  • Leading initiatives to improve Closed Loop Learning and integrating continuous process improvement with daily work
  • Support evaluation of maintenance practices to improve long term reliability of solar & storage projects


Minimum requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 5+ years of related experience or equivalent
  • Demonstrated safety, quality and customer-first focus
  • Troubleshooting expertise with the ability to systematically approach issues, diagnose and correct
  • Capable of identifying technical risks and communicating connections to commercial concerns
  • Practical experience with electrical wiring, remote monitoring and basic construction practices
  • Successful experience working independently with limited direction and oversight
  • Ability to manage time well, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Process-oriented and strong organizational skills with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Well-developed written and verbal interpersonal abilities; capable of interacting effectively with people at all levels of the organization, as well as outside stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time both domestically and internationally post-COVID


Preferred requirements

  • Advanced degree in Engineering
  • OSHA 30 Certified
  • 5+ years of experience within the renewable energy industry, especially Commercial Solar and Storage O&M
  • Expertise troubleshooting string and central inverter operation, storage, AC and DC systems, transformers, switchgears, power meters, meteorological stations and SCADA systems 
  • Fluency interpreting IV Curve Tracing, thermal imaging, aerial operations and shade analysis
  • Skill configuring communications and troubleshooting Ethernet, Modbus and other networking connections
  • Strong desire to advance the adoption of renewable energies in the global energy mix
