Senior Software Engineer - Simulation and Scientific Computing

SunPower is looking for a senior software engineer specializing in simulation and scientific computing and large-scale simulation. Work cross-functionally with other engineering, product management, and business teams to deliver robust software solutions in production. Tackle tough simulation, mathematics, data science, and product problems and produce high-quality working software that addresses all requirements. Create state-of-the-art visualizations and dashboards to illustrate findings. Create automated testing, including unit tests, integration tests, and systems tests. Rapidly diagnose and mitigate issues in production systems. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Enhance the photovoltaic simulation application that serves as the bedrock for our customer roof designs 
  • Apply data science and machine learning models to help improve the accuracy of our physics-based models 
  • Parallelize PV simulation using modern techniques such as Dask 
  • Write and maintain comprehensive unit tests  
  • Develop APIs and RESTful services 
  • Consider security, scalability, maintainability, responsiveness and other key metrics during software development. 
  • Resolve and minimize application downtime 
  • Communicate effectiveness of emerging technologies to decision-makers  



Minimum Education and Experience: 

·        B.S. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Physics, or equivalent with 5 years relevant working experience; OR M.S. degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or equivalent with 3 years relevant working experience 

·        5 or more years of experience coding in Python 

·        Strong experience with the Python scientific stack (scipy / numpy / pandas) 

·       Strong knowledge of source control solutions such as Git, development workflows, and software best practices 

·        Strong experience in building reliable software using test automation (pytest, mocking, etc.) 

·        Experience developing simulation software and models in scientific applications including photovoltaic energy production. 

·        Working experience with Django and the Django REST framework 

·        Proven understanding of automated testing, deployment, process and tools (such as Docker, CircleCI, TravisCI, Jenkins, etc.) 

·        Experience working in production data pipelines that involve simulation, big data and statistical models 

·        Excellent knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server  

·        Proven experience developing highly available applications in a cloud environment, such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud 

·        Experience with Agile software development and great written and verbal communication skills 


Preferred Education and Experience: 

·        Experience using SQL to extract data from cloud data warehouses like BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake, or Azure SQL  

·        Experience in Docker and container orchestrators 

·        Proven experience developing applications within an AWS environment. 

·        Working experience with applications based on time series data. 

·        Working experience with building and maintaining REST APIs.
