Summary of Role:

The Applications Engineering (AE) team is the “voice of the customer” and is the bridge between engineering and the field. The AE team ensures a successful rollout of new products and uses a closed-loop learning process to influence the roadmap of new product development and sustaining product improvements. Primary responsibilities of this role include: providing technical training and support to internal and external stakeholders, gathering stakeholder feedback and recommending process and product improvements, identifying project level solutions, supporting product evaluation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams for a successful launch of SunPower’s products. The ideal candidate will be technically strong and comfortable engaging with various functional groups including engineering development, sales, customers, manufacturing, operations, and technical support


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify and address challenges preventing opportunities from turning into orders
  • Develop and manage necessary support processes, documentation, and tools to enable successful and efficient technical sales
  • Provide product training, including key technical features as well as proper use of processes and tools, to both internal and external groups
  • Drive, track, and analyze pilot programs
  • Act as first-level escalation point for technical support inquiries and field engineering support
  • Act in client-facing meetings, presentations and conferences
  • Understand local regulations, utility requirements, and norms periodically to ensure that SunPower solutions are compliant and current with changing market requirements
  • Gather feedback and new requirements from customers and installers
  • Work closely with the product management team and internal and external customers to define and prioritize feature development
  • Facilitate interactions between NPI and various teams (product management, supply chain, purchasing, engineering, technical writers, etc.) to successfully perform product pilots and launches
  • Provide critical closed-loop learning to Engineering, Product Management, and Sales teams, with experiences derived from field experiences as well as interactions with customers
  • Define and drive solutions for project-specific challenges


Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering and 5+ years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 3+ years
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and years of related experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in a technical field from a leading engineering program, preferably electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Solid technical foundation, ability to learn quickly and demonstrated ability to frame and drive technical decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and coordinate cross-functional teams
  • Strong oral and written presentation skills with an ability to communicate effectively to a wide variety of clients and partners
  • Self-starter, able to thrive in a fast-paced and continually changing environment
  • Proficiency with MS Visio, CAD, and industry-specific software and tools (e.g., PVsyst, PVSim, Aurora, SunEye, etc.)
  • Experience with NFPA 70 National Electrical Code
  • Experience supporting technical sales and working with customers
  • Excellent technical understanding of residential and commercial grid-tied photovoltaic systems and energy storage technologies including inverters, battery systems, monitoring & communications, and energy management technologies
  • Strong knowledge of relevant PV and energy storage codes and standards: NEC, ASCE, NABCEP, OSHA, UL, CAL Fire, IEC
  • Experience with design, engineering, and/or installation of solar + storage desired
  • Knowledge of residential and commercial building electrical wiring practices
  • Experience with troubleshooting and debugging of electronic systems


Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Individuals in this position may be required to obtain additional training and certifications to comply with SunPower policies such as (but not limited to) NFPA70E or First Aid/CPR.

Travel throughout the US may be required. Up to 25% average travel with occasional overnight stays.

This is an office-based position, and candidates are expected to report to their local office.
